Bismillah and Assalamualaikum,

A few years before I got married and had my own kids, I read a book on homeschooling. It shaped my perspective when it comes to how children learn till today. The book was in fact titled, “How children learn.” by John Holt.

The book began with explaining how babies are not blobs. If you take a step back and look at how babies interact with the world around them, you can see that they’re pretty capable of learning.

Look at how their curious eyes observe, how they touch and put things in their mouth, how they drop objects from their high chair.

They’re exploring, experiencing and experimenting. Basically, they're learning!

Funny how when these little babies grow into toddlers, then preschoolers and kindergarteners, we forget how capable they are at learning.

We may even get a little pressured to want them to do well in school, so much so that we push them a little too early or a little too hard. And by the time they become teenagers, they’ve lost that spark in their eyes and learning becomes a chore.

Where did we go wrong? It’s pretty simple actually. Instead of pushing them a little too hard, we just need to meet them at where they are.

But one thing that we must always do as parents is to keep on learning. Alhamdulillah, we live in a time where information is just at the tip of our fingers. We just need to be resourceful in finding the right information and implementing it.
